Welcome!

Hi,

My name is Mrs. Welpman and I teach 3rd grade at KIS International School.  This year I have 8 wonderful kids in my room.

We are excited about blogging with your school in Jakarta and are looking forward to learning more about you.

This is my second year teaching at KIS, and I love it here!!!! Our school is amazing!  I currently live outside of Seoul, Korea. I am originally from the beautiful Pacific Northwest, in Washington State. My husband and I live in Gig Harbor, Washington, and return there for the summers.

I have enjoyed living in Korea so far, and try to get out and explore new areas and places on the weekends. One thing I do not enjoy is the cold winters here. I am used to some ice and snow in Washington, and have even done a little bit of skiing, but the winter's here are even colder and seem to last forever!

Things that I like to do in my spare time when I am not teaching are: reading books, traveling, sight seeing, biking, hiking, and relaxing at home.

I was fortunate to be able to travel to Bali in September, and loved the climate there. I would love to go back, and maybe even be able to explore Jakarta next time.

I look forward to hearing back from you soon!
Mrs. Welpman

Announcements for the week of May 1st:

Spring is finally here! We are working hard in 3B and we are going to continue to be very busy until the end of the year.

Students are currently learning about Immigration to the United States. The culminating project will be for students to participate in a simulation to Ellis Island on May 13th. They will be allowed to come to school dressed as an immigrant that day, and bring with them a suitcase of their few belongings. Also, be prepared for your child to ask you about their family history, and to find out if anyone in the family has ever immigrated to another country.

I have added a few more online learning sites for students to go to, so that we can become more global in our learning. From time to time students will be asked to go to Studyladder.com and to log in to do Math assignments, or other tasks.

Another one is http://mswelpman.collaborizeclassroom.com. This is another site where I can ask questions about specific things that were talked about in our classroom, and students will have a chance to respond to each other's comments also. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. As always, we continue to talk about online safety and having parent permission.

Quick Reminders: Students are now swimming again in P.E. If your child is sick, please have a note from the doctor to excuse them, otherwise they will be expected in swim.
Sports Day will be on May 16th. Students will be expected to participate in all events that day. From the looks of it, it should be a great day of fun!

Please remember to participate in the iPad training for parents:
May 8th: Sharing, Managing and Collaborating with Files
May 15th: Model Lesson with iPads

MAP TESTING Our first test is on Tuesday, the 16th. Students will take their Reading and Language Test.
Thursday, the 18th; students will take their Math test. Please make sure that your child gets plenty of rest the night before, and eats a good breakfast in the morning. Students often find that if they are tired or hungry during a test, it interferes with their ability to concentrate. They will have their normal recess and snack times between the two tests.

PARENTS: Please continue to attend the iPad training sessions coming up. These sessions are designed to offer information about our One to World teaching and learning philosophy.

Dates: April 17th: Improving English & Math
April 24th: Communication Tools
May 1st: Camera and Microphone

Market Day was a huge success and our students really enjoyed it. Thank you for all of your help and supporting your child with this project. Please enjoy the following video:

UPCOMING EVENTS:
Week of April 1st-5th

Welcome back from Spring Break! I hope you are relaxed, rested, and ready to start our last quarter together! I can't believe how fast the time has flown by here, and the upcoming weeks are only going to continue to get very busy!

Market Day has been moved to April 8th. Students have already signed their permission slips in order to participate and indicate whether they are selling "goods" or providing a "service." Parents, please contact me if there needs to be any changes. Whatever they bring, it must fit on their desk! I am very excited to participate as a buyer and am sure that I will enjoy some baked goods; as well as some artsy-crafty things.:) Students will get to shop and sell to the other third grade classrooms as well.

We are finishing up our unit on Fractions this week, and will be taking our test. Our next unit will be on Multiplication and Division. ***A new website for them to go to for more practice other than Kahn Academy; is www.Studyladder.com. Students were given their passwords today; and can work on different tasks that I have assigned to them. As always, they are to practice internet safety and get your permission first!

Thank you all for participating in student led conferences. Everyone did a fabulous job showcasing their hard work. I enjoyed reading your letters to your child offering them support and guidance.

Please check back often, as I will continue to add new things.
